Superb early miniature painted on vellum of Lady Mary Compton who married Sir Henry Compton between 1620 and 1630. I have been trying to put together her story as her first husband died in 1621 and sometime after she married Sir Henry Compton who already had a wife Cecily Sackville who had given him 7 children, the last born around 1621. Cecily may have had enough of married life by then. even though divorced or sepaarated from Lord Compton she went on to live to a very old age. Mary Browne's first husband died in 1621. When she would have been around 39 years old Snelling who is alleged to have painted this would only have been about age 20 in 1641 and Mary Browne 59 years old, therefore the portrait could be an idealised version of her. Perhaps it was painted postumously. The information on the name of sitter and artist came from a private collection. It is certainly very much in the style of Snelling in the tiny details. Set in a sterling silver frame. Height of frame 7cms Width 5.5cms
