A late 17th century Northern European casket part of courtship customs. A luxury love token and a symbol of engagement. Here designed with symblic intention. The delicate little casket has 5 enamel painted plaques depicting bucolic country scenes with grape harvest indicating a good fertile and prosperous life and harmony between man and nature. 5.5x4x 3 cms. A fantastic early marriage gift. It may have been used to hold a love token or to hold rings. The imagery is refined as its allegorical rather than literal romance, possibly influenced by printed imagery or enamel workshops but the execution is somewhat naive indicating a provincial workshop. Painted enamel became more common in the later 17th century. Dutch caskets were much smaller than German ones.
