An exquisite mid 18th century portrait of a lady whose name is rather indecipherable Mrs De Breou... who died in jamaica as is written on the back of the frame. The painting itself is fitted into possibly a later frame. It is a rather plain portrait and the sitter is not wearing a great deal of decoration or any jewels and a simple lace cap. This is possibly a portrait of her as a maid or newly married woman. She would have come from the emerging middle classes of the period, neither aristocrat nor manual worker. I am unsure as to whether she was British, French or American but the style is very much of the English Roccoco of the period. Height of painting cms, height of frame 13cms.
